2012 LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE POW!!!  A great turnout for the 2012 Leadership Conference Jan. 26-27 in York, Neb.  The HR Community is in good hands with leaders learning ways to prosper the field of Human Resources in the state of Nebraska.  Local chapters will walk away with more ideas on networking, legislations, membership and community involvement.  Leaders, from left, are: Brenda Jones, Joel Scherling, Amy Spellman, Melissa Price, Judy Fischer and Kelly White.

YOUR SHRM NEBRASKA STATE COUNCIL IS FOLLOWING NEBRASKA BILL LB959 - IMMUNITY FOR REFERENCES.  THIS BILL IS SCHEDULED FOR HEARING FEB. 6 BEFORE THE BUSINESS AND LABOR COMMITTEE.  THE COUNCIL ENCOURAGES HR PROFESSIONALS THROUGHOUT THE STATE TO STUDY THIS LEGISLATION AND LET YOUR OPINION BE KNOWN. 

NEBRASKA STATE LEGISLATURE UPDATE (Most Significant Employment Bills)  The SHRM State Council provides these Jan 25, 2012 updates for Nebraska Legislative bills.  The report includes an expanded discussion of hot legislation; law synopsis when passed; and an explanation of employer impact.  The legislature has set its agenda for the year.  Other than two workers comp and one CIR Bill, there are no other employment-related bills to be considered.  The workers comp bills are largely significant for litigation of workers comp claims.  While the Business and Labor Committee has not released its CIR bill just yet.

CERTIFICATION SCHOLARSHIP!! HRCI has provided SHRM Nebraksa State Council a scholarship available to HR professionals that covers the certification exam and application fees for the Spring 2012 testing window.  To be considered for the scholarship, you must complete a short application before Feb. 20.  If you want to learn more information about certification including the benefits of becoming certified, eligibility requirements, exam format, or if you just have questions, join the statewide conference call 3 p.m., Jan. 31, 877-523-8421.  Also the second annual statewide certification study group is meeting every Monday evening for three hours starting Jan. 30.  Individuals can participate in-person in Lincoln or via distance learning with internet and phone access.  To register participants should visit lincolnhr.org.

SHRM NEBRASKA COUNCIL ADDS PROFESSIONALS The state council promotes and protects the human resource profession throughout the state thanks to the dedicated work of volunteer leaders.  In 2012, the council welcomes these new leaders:  Summer Parker, at large director; Marsha Dreesen, Foundation director; Bruce Stec, HRAM chapter president; Jenny Beaver, CAHRMA chapter president; Judy Ganoung, LHRMA chapter president; and Craig Garrett, CNHRMA chapter president.

CHAPTERS SHINE WITH EXCELLENCE AWARDS  Hats off to HRAM, LHRMA and Central Nebraska HRMA on earning the Silver SHAPE Chapter Excellence Awards and to Norfolk HRA on earning the Bronze SHAPE Chapter Excellence Awards.  The North Central Region (which SHRM NE is a part of) was the most successful region as well.

PHR & SPHR Study Group offered state-wide!

SHRM Nebraska State Council and Lincoln Human Resource Management Association are hosting a study group to assist you with certification.  Attend in-person at Nebraska Book Company in Lincoln or as a distant learning participant on-line.

The group meets Jan. 30 - April 23, every Monday from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Fee is $75 for LHRMA members and $130 for non-LHRMA members and distance learners

Distance learners must provide internet access and a phone line.  Calls will be toll-free.  Distance learners see the presentations via internet and participate in group discussions through a conference call line.  This is not a recorded session and participants must adhere to a class schedule.

The certification study group has been extremely successful in the past with a 90 percent pass rate.

HOW DO I JOIN SHRM NEBRASKA? If you are a Nebraska resident and a member of SHRM National, nothing extra is required of you - you are automatically a member of SHRM Nebraska Council.  To determine a local chapter near you click step 1.    At-large member is someone who has joined the national SHRM organization but has not joined their local chapter.  Leadership opportunities are available through your local chapter or on the board of the Nebraska State Council.  Contact information for these leaders are available under the About Us and Chapter tabs.
